Google Powers 92.27% of New Zealand Searches in December 2008

According to Hitwise’s New Zealand January newsletter, that is the case. 92.7% of all New Zealand searches in December were from people using google.co.nz or google.com.

We must admit that this figure surprises us, considering that http://nz.yahoo.com/ (old Xtra’s home page) is probably the default home page opening in at least 25% (our guess) of all browser sessions in NZ, and the default search engine from that page is Yahoo. We will not argue the toss, cause they gather the info – not us.

Hitwise continue to say that "MSN Search and Yahoo! Search properties each accounted for 1.63% and 3.36% of search traffic respectively".

Their sample is over 460,000 NZ internet users
