Domain name rip-off. Domain Renewal Group spaming NZ domain name owners
Posted January 13th, 2009 by peterIt has come to our attention that a company called Domain Renewal Group from Australia has been sending snail mail letters to clients "offering" to be their domain name registrar.
This seems like a simiar scam from Domain Registry of America that has been seen over the years.
We strongly suggest that you do not respond to their correspondence, which looks pretty convincing and professional.
Their prices are of first concern – in the example we have seen they offer renewal of a .com name for $AUS45 per year or $AUS75 for 2 years. When you consider that for a dot com name you can buy them in NZ from around $20 and sometimes less.
The second issue we have is that often these types of domain name retailers are extremely hard to recover your domain name from when you have found out how much they have ripped you off.
We suggest you deal with a reputable NZ based registered domain name reseller or registrar when buying or renewing domain names.
Below is an example of a letter from Domain Renewal Group

Looks sort of similar to this letter
Buyer beware

Yeah – we just got one of these for our animation festival & it’s sub site (not even on a connected domain!). Amazing that they make it so invoice like and actually bother to send out the letter. Some serious people (probably our clients!!) must be being ripped off in order for them to justify the mail out…

We have just got our Domain Renewal Group letter for a domain we purchased from Google. After a quick search we discovered it was a scam. Is there anyone in New Zealand we can report this to?

Thank you for your article about the nasty attempts from ” DOMAIN RENEWAL GROUP ” to beguile Webmaster and / or internauts to ” register ” with them.
I received such a letter from this shady Company, and OF COURSE their letter went down to the nearest dustbin, since I am registered for a number of year, with a reliabble company ! ! !
