.asia domain name – worth the investment?

Domainz sent out an email today to their clients. It seems that pre registration period is over for the top level domain .asia

But is it worth while investing in a .asia domain name? The cost we are told over the phone is $159 (incl gst) for a 2 year period or $70.67 per annum (excl gst)

It is interesting that Wikipedia say this about .asia: This is a TLD for companies, organizations, and individuals based in the region of Asia, Australia, and the Pacific.

However, we are not convinced that it is a good idea to purchase the .asia domain name unless the following is really really important and you don’t need to worry about your budget.

  • You are doing a lot of business or intend doing a lot of business in the Asia region
  • You wish to protect your brand and stop anyone else from registering your known domain name with the .asia version (maybe you should also register the same with the other 270 odd top level domain names (count them here)).

If that is the case you probably have lots of money to spend anyway, and in more recent times it has become reasonably inexpensive to claim your branded domain name because there has been plenty of court cases that domain name squatters have lost – the precedent has been set

However, most businesses in New Zealand probably do not consider themselves in the above. It’s ok if you are Fonterra or a major corporate.

Anyway, I don’t think that many smart businesses would purchase through domainz when you can go here and purchase for as little as $US19.99 a year and save yourself around 260%
