So long Ihug – its been good to know you
Posted January 23rd, 2008 by peterVodafone (who purchased Ihug back in Oct 2007) has announced it is dropping the brand in favour of bringing it under the banner of their own business identity. Ihug (stands for Internet Home Users Group) started life in 1994 and was the first NZ company to introduce flat rate internet..
I recall their launch back then, and although we did not have access to Ihug from Nelson, it was not much earlier that we Nelsonians had to make a toll call to either Wellington (in my case Actrix) or Christchurch to connect with the net. Whilst email and newsgroups were not include in you bandwidth allocation in those days, to do a quick surf around or to download files cost a whopping $8 per meg – ouch !!!!
Fortunately ICONZ and Tasman Solutions then opened their doors to local residents in 1995, so a toll was no longer necessary.
Whilst personnally Ihug has never been a ISP for me or any of the businesses I have been involved in, Ihug has been a great internet supplier over the years to lots of people I know, and in the main they were an outstanding company to deal with.
Lets hope the Vodafone brand keeps up the tradition
