The do not track list – coming soon to the web
Posted November 2nd, 2007 by peterWhen you visit many websites, particularly large overseas websites (and to some extent even NZ websites) information about your visits are being recorded for advertising purposes. Dont worry too much, it is not personal information they are gathering (unlike using your one card at woolworths for example), it is more about identifying the surfing habits of users of your computer, so web sites can "serve" advertising relevant to your online viewing habits.
Now, AOL (thats the AOL of Time Warner) say they want to give people a way to keep their internet habits private, and give their users a way of seeing online adverts that they want to see.
From my perspective, I would rather not see any ads (dont you hate those little movies that shoot out from the side of your screen) and generally totally ignore the others I see, but I am realistic, and know that a lot of content I look at on the web could not be free to view without advertising.
