A little over 25 years ago – well exactly at 11:44am on September 19th 1982 actually, a professor at Carnegie Mellon University – Scott E. Fahlman, says he was the first to use a colon followed by a hyphen and a parenthesis as a smiley face in a computer message posted on an online e-bulletin board

To mark the anniversary, Fahlman and his colleagues are starting an annual student contest. The Smiley Award, sponsored by Yahoo has a $US500 cash price. More … and even more here
